RCF/RPM Conversion Calculator

22. RCF to RPM Converter

Convert Relative Centrifugal Force (g) to rotor speed (RPM).

Speed: -- RPM

Scientific Documentation

Centrifugation forces depend on the rotational speed and the radius of the rotor. The formula to convert RCF ($g$) to RPM is:

$RPM = \sqrt{\frac{RCF}{1.118 \times 10^{-5} \times r}}$

Where r is the radius in centimeters (the distance from the center of rotation to the bottom of the tube).

Experimental Importance: Because different centrifuges have rotors with different radii, using the same RPM across different machines will result in different sedimentation forces. By calculating RPM based on the specific radius of your rotor, you ensure that your biological samples (e.g., cell pellets or DNA precipitates) are subjected to the precise force required for the protocol, ensuring consistent results regardless of the equipment used.
