The Henderson-Hasselbalch equation—$pH = pK_a + \log\left(\frac{[A^-]}{[HA]}\right)$—is the fundamental expression for calculating the pH of a buffer solution. It represents the logarithmic relationship between the dissociation constant of a weak acid and the ratio of the conjugate base concentration to the conjugate acid concentration.

Mechanistic Context: Buffers are designed to resist changes in pH. This capability is maximized when the pH of the solution is equal to the $pK_a$ of the buffer system.
