To determine the number of DNA copies in a sample, we calculate based on the molecular weight of the DNA. Each base pair (bp) has an average molecular weight of approximately 650 Daltons (g/mol).

The Calculation: The number of molecules is derived using Avogadro’s number ($6.022 \times 10^{23}$):

$Copies = \frac{Mass (g) \times 6.022 \times 10^{23}}{Length (bp) \times 650}$

Clinical & Research Significance: This calculation is fundamental for determining the sensitivity of diagnostic PCR assays and for creating standard curves in absolute quantification. By converting mass to molarity or copies, researchers can standardize input DNA amounts across different experiments, ensuring comparability of results.
